last night homeless friends was interviewed on capetalk re the LOCKDOWN emergency shelter process.
it was pointed out that 7500- 10000 approx roam the streets but so many conflicting coc and other reports have been published ( updated 26/2/220 today 26/3 zahied badrodien published this so this article must now be updated in thet few days
. We see so much distorted information on homeless circulating well meaning groups through no fault of their own.
We see information told over and over by city of capetown that does not account for and fall in line with NGOS perpective who work with homeless. SAFE SPACE +SHELTERS must supported but read carefully please to understand that STILL the vast majority of homeless on the street have NEVER been supported . And we need to understand the funding process clearly to create equitable sponsorship . These others have no strctures that cater for them.
Some come from township to find work skerreling (buying and selling or collecting and selling) but many live on the street for various reasons, but mainly due to poverty at the root of it all.
Bear in mind shelters do have big corporate sponsors but only provide shelter for around 2500 our of approx 10,000 homless popele....those remaining, most of the recognised soup kitchens like ladles of love UTURN provide only 1500 approx ( im sure supertroopers and others wil be involved ......)
.We need to provide food right now in the NEW EMERGENCY SHELTER housing it is HOPED 8000/10000 + ? and we need to see which other soup kitchens /businesses , government funds are going to provide that food in the 8 allocated spaces for many 1000s are going to be allocated ..That is if and when people who will be reluctant and frightened as would you and I ( think about it ?) many of them to go there.....and if several 1000 do not ....well they will soon be "forced" by hunger as noone wil be on the streets to help them with food (their primary source together with SKERRELING ,,,buying and selling scrap, washing cars and the very inventive ways homeless find a way to survive etc ect)
i would suggest people contact homeless ngos township soup kitchens : and use our web which has been worked on for years to understand the needs.of lockdown on a day to day basis ..this coronvirus section opened for homeless will expand because those in shelter need a future, not just a lockdown
We are a public group who yes have our projects in peninsula feeding but the purpose of the web is to provide an overview of homelessness from many angles
This particular article is not just our opinions but consulting with many NGOS who have vast experience. UTURN LADLES OF LOVE SOUPERTROPPERS and More .listed here (updating today ) .
Lets repeat we need to provide right now in the NEW EMERGENCY SHELTERS it is HOPED 8000 IF we can find them and get them there to prtect them and other fomr coronovrus spread. +
we need to see which other soup kitchens are going to provide that food in the 8 allocated spaces for approx 8000-10000 are going to be allocated
"suddenly " we need 8 EMERGENCY SHELTERS. But here we go over and over proposing to support the people who are already supported by far the most. Im not saying dont support them im saying lets be equitable
Most NGOS will agree with me and especially the many small soup kitchens too.
will all "street people " go in an be found? where do they REALLY come from ? townships skerreling or live on the street ?. the fact is we dont know its never really been researched well enough .But we know some its 50/50 in fact perhaps the majority?
some nights sleeping on street ready to skerrel in well to do neighbourhoods and take back earnings to township and sleeop there a night or two
. Lets us hope so for their sake, but they wont have an easy time crowded 1000 into a "safe space " or will there building to house 1000 at time .let us see the anouncement of COC today
they need FAR MORE than donations - THey need cell phones data ......medical care clothes skills training work DIGNITY
Our web is going to focus more pages on these needs under the new coronasection . we need to think who we are consulting in the homeless NGO (soup kitchen etc workign on street and in townships and now hopefully in emergency shelters ) before we post randomly on social media please.
we have lot of information but havent had time to update on our web, but now we will be focusing on it more and be sending it to capetalk too as they are now more aware of the situation overall .
that fundamentally at least 4000 + homless are NOT catered for and never have been and the majority goes to the same 2000 in
shelter over and over again, We cant repeat that enough.
Lets all be kind to each other . lets work togther coc pubnlic shelter ngo and homeless people and listen to them as people with respect.
see comments on a daily hourly basis you as NGOSo urgently now needing fonmation to use for appeals please (and little soup kitchens esp in townships CLICK HERE
